Manager Louis Van Gaal had been hoping to strike a deal to sign the young Brazilian this summer in a bid to bolster his lacklustre defence.

However, the 19-year-old, who signed on from Roma in 2013 on a five-year deal, has agreed an extension of a further year and will now be tied down to the defending French champions until 2019.

“It’s great, very good news. It shows that I’m doing a good job,” he said.

“I’m very happy that the club are showing such confidence in me. The project here in Paris is magnificent and life in Paris is wonderful.

“I’m very happy with everything that’s happened in my life since signing here.

“PSG have provided so much for me. I hope it continues for a long time to come.”

Marquinhos had begun the season slowly, but has started to get more game time under his belt recently, and even played a key part in helping PSG dump Chelsea out of the Champions League.

He has also started to make headway into the Brazilian national team, though he could not add to his four caps during Thursday night’s friendly victory over France.
