Rooney has been in fine form recently, and with the poor displays of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao this season, the 29-year-old has proved hugely important to his side.

He has been deployed in a host of different positions for both club and country, with his versatility meaning he is often forced out of his favoured position to accommodate other less adaptable players.

Hodgson prefers using him as an out and out striker, so to see him back in that role for Manchester United is obviously fantastic news.

“[Danny] Welbeck is still very much in contention as is Rooney, who we are delighted to see playing up front again for Manchester United because we have always used him as a front player,” Hodgson said.

With the emergence of Harry Kane this season, Rooney has plenty of competition for a starting spot, even if Hodgson opts to play two up front.

Arsenal’s Welbeck has been excellent for England, with an unbelievable scoring record. Kane’s goals for Tottenham mean he can’t be ignored, and when fit Daniel Sturridge is arguably the first choice forward for England.

As England captain however, Rooney is likely to be included in some capacity, even if it’s not as the main striker.
