The former Arsenal and Barcelona man enjoyed a breathtaking start to his career at Stamford Bridge, but has tailed off since new year, failing to have the same impact and influence for his side.

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes his loss of form is down to a crisis in confidence for the Spaniard, rather than a lack of ability, having only scored four goals all season.

“Cesc has struggled. He was terrific in the first part of the season but he hasn’t looked the same,” he said.

“His goal ratio was one in five at Arsenal, one in three for Barcelona. He has got two in 25 for Chelsea and he is meant to be an offensive, effective player.

“He can make assists but he just doesn’t look like he has got the legs to get around the park at the moment. It is just not quite working for him.

“I think he is slightly lacking confidence from where he was he was a year ago.”

Fabregas has made 19 assists for his side this season, though, and will any loss of confidence may well disappear if Chelsea, as expected, lift the Premier League trophy once again.
