It is thought Greg Dyke wants to wait until after the completion of next summer’s European Championships before opening talks with the former Liverpool boss – with the FA chief reluctant to offer Roy the two year extension he desires in case England once again fail to impress.

Dyke is quoted as saying “I get on quite well with Roy and I chat to him all the time. We have not talked about contracts yet. We will have the discussion with Roy in the next nine months to a year.”

Hodgson was widely considered to be fortunate not to be sacked after the embarrassment in Brazil, with several other international bosses being given their marching orders despite turning in much more impressive performances.

Since the summer Roy’s men are unbeaten, and are currently top of the European qualifying group with four wins from four games. They face Lithuania later this week.
