LOWS:
1) Red card vs Man United
In his final season at Liverpool, and in all probability his last ever game against bitter rivals Manchester United, Steven Gerrard lasted just 40 seconds before getting a needless red card at Anfield. A sad end to such a great career on Merseyside.
2) Slip vs Chelsea
With Liverpool mounting an unlikely title challenge last season, this moment will haunt Gerrard forever – his slip allowed Demba Ba in to score a decisive goal that put the league out of the Reds’ hands, a battle they would ultimately lose to Manchester City. Gerrard’s best chance to win that elusive title blown in one unfortunate moment.
3) Own goal vs Chelsea
Another bad moment against Chelsea, Gerrard put the Blues back into this League Cup final clash by heading in past his own goalkeeper, ultimately leading to Liverpool losing the game in extra time and handing the Blues the belief they needed to become a dominant force in Jose Mourinho’s first season in England.
4) Slip vs France in Euro 2004
A total cock-up by England, but Gerrard will always look back in horror as, with the score at 1-1, his back-pass found a certain Thierry Henry, who won a stoppage time penalty to seal a remarkable comeback by France in Euro 2004.
HIGHS:
1) Wondergoal in 5-1 win vs Germany
Still a promising youngster at this stage, Gerrard announced himself on the international stage with a superb long-range strike to put England in front against Germany, leading to a resounding 5-1 win and a fine all-round display from the all-action midfielder.
2) Performance in Istanbul
Scorer of Liverpool’s first goal in perhaps the finest night of his career, Gerrard single-handedly inspired the Reds’ amazing comeback from 3-0 down against AC Milan, helping to a 3-3 draw a victory on penalties to win the club’s fifth European Cup.
3) ‘The Gerrard final’
An amazing FA Cup final now known as ‘the Gerrard final’, Stevie G outdid himself here, scoring a stoppage time equaliser with an absolute belter when he’d spent the final few minutes limping and unable to properly contribute to the game. What a strike to help win the trophy.
4) Hat-trick vs Everton
A player with a fine record against Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton, Gerrard was in majestic form to hit a hat-trick from midfield in this memorable 3-0 victory at Anfield.
