Louis van Gaal has seen on-loan forward Radamel Falcao struggle to impress whilst Robin Van Persie has suffered with form and fitness.

Fortunately these factors have been, in part, negated by Wayne Rooney’s fine form leading the line but one can well see why van Gaal would be eyeing up a fresh forward capture.

The Metro claim that both Man City and Chelsea are also pursuing 22 year old Argentine Icardi, with scouts from all three Premier League sides present during Inter Milan’s 1-0 defeat to Sampdoria on Sunday.

Icardi has netted 15 goals in 24 Serie A starts. Only Juventus ace Carlos Tevez has scored more this season, and the prolific form shown by the former Barcelona youth team prospect is all the more impressive given Roberto Mancini’s side sit in mid-table.

If Inter Milan fail to secure a Champions League berth then could they struggle to keep Icardi?
