The Reds are set to lose the former England international in the summer, with his contract running out. With this in mind they have had their attention caught by the Dutchman, who has been impressive for the Magpies in his debut Premier League season.
However, the Merseyside club could hit a stumbling block in the right-back’s contract. The 25-year-old signed a six year deal in August, and the Toon are unlikely to be worried about making a new offer to him in the near future.
The Anfield outfit are still likely to make a bid for the player, with a full-back one of their priorities in the summer. Glen Johnson leaving coupled with Jon Flanagan’s long term injury could leave them very short at right-back.
