The Swiss international is highly regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe at the moment, and has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs in the past.
United were recently tipped as frontrunners to sign Rodriguez, but it now looks as though Chelsea are stepping up their interest in landing the player.
The in-form 22-year-old could be an ideal replacement at left-back for disappointing Blues summer signing Filipe Luis, while Cesar Azpilicueta has been first choice but is not a natural in the position.
