According to a club insider, the confrontation was so heated that the rest of the team feared the duo could get involved in a punch-up, with manager Manuel Pellegrini having to step in to try to defuse the tempers.

Kompany, however, ignored his manager, and wouldn’t back down from the Brazilian.

Both players were consequently dropped for the clash against Leicester, with the skipper on the bench, while Fernandinho wasn’t named at all in the squad.

This will be music to the ears of Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who will be delighted to hear that there’s trouble behind the scenes of the Premier League champions.

Chelsea sit top of the table, and could go eight points clear if they win their game in hand.
