The 25-year-old headed back to MLS in January, as part of the deal that brought former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe to the Stadium of Light, and has instantly hit the ground running with two goals against Canadian rivals Vancouver Whitecaps, in a 3-1 victory on the opening day of the new season.
Unfortunately for Altidore, he will no doubt go down as one of the worst ever Premier League strikers, due to his barren spell whilst with Sunderland, where he managed just one league goal in 42 appearances for the club.
However, his time in the north-east was not the only poor stint he had in England – arguably making the £6.5m that Sunderland spent on him more bizarre – having also managed only a solitary goal during a season-long loan with Hull City.
That means his brace against Vancouver has already equalled his entire goals total in 80 appearances in English football.
