Man City transfer news
His teammates have moved quickly to reassure him over his future, with goalkeeper Joe Hart claiming that he expects the Belgian to make a swift return to form, and to the starting line-up.
However, his indifferent form is a warning to some of the Premier League’s other top stars, many of whom have also been out of sorts so far this year. In the list below, we rank ten regular appearance makers who deserve a little more time on the sidelines:
10) Vincent Kompany (Manchester City)
The City captain has become renowned as one of the Premier League’s top defenders, but he’s been anything but in recent games, and was ripped apart by Liverpool last weekend.
9) Christian Benteke (Aston Villa)
Once thought of as one of the deadliest strikers in the Premier League, the Belgian simply hasn’t produced for Villa so far this season. With just three Premier League goals, he needs to do more if they’re to stay up.
8) Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
He’s been scoring for fun in the cup competitions, but his meagre tally of seven Premier League goals is worrying, especially considering Everton’s current lowly league position. They’re not safe yet!
7) Erik Lamela (Tottenham Hotspur)
The Argentine winger has often been too busy showing off his clever skills rather than focusing on doing a job for the team. With Spurs having spent a record transfer fee on his services, he’s running out of time to prove he’s worth it.
6) Per Mertesacker (Arsenal)
The giant German has definitely been a decent player for Arsenal over the last couple of years, but he’s surely been caught out once too often for a team desperately chasing a higher grade of success.
5) Dejan Lovren (Liverpool)
Recalled to the Liverpool starting line-up following an injury to Mamadou Sakho, the £20m Croatian continues to look shaky – particularly on the ball. Maybe Brendan Rodgers would do better just to get rid next summer.
4) Radamel Falcao (Manchester United)
Already something of a fringe player, the Colombian has been a huge disappointment since his arrival on loan from Monaco. He’s done little to justify his huge wages, and United are seemingly counting down the days until his departure.
3) Tim Howard (Everton)
The American was one of the stars of last summer’s World Cup, but has struggled to live up to his enhanced reputation so far this season, with a number of high-profile errors costing his side valuable points.
2) Edin Dzeko (Manchester City)
The Bosnian has been well short of his usual standards, with his problems in front of goal emphasising those of a team on the slide under Manuel Pellegrini – all seemingly struggling to live up to expectations.
1) Angel di Maria (Manchester United)
United’s record signing has so far struggled to adapt to life in English football. He’s without a goal or an assist since his return from injury, and was hauled off at half-time last weekend. Does he even want to be at the club? If he does, he needs to prove it.
