The club’s official website have confirmed the deal, with Reid quoted as saying: “It’s one of those things that took a bit of time, but we got there in the end and I’m very happy to be here for the next part of my career. I’m looking forward to it.”

Already 26, Reid’s six-and-a-half year deal will keep him in east London up to the age of 33, and it is rare for a club to commit to such a long contract for a player at that age given the one year offerings typically handed to veteran players these days.

Still, the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have been strongly linked with the in-form centre-back this season, with Reid’s previous deal expiring in the summer.

However, West Ham have pulled off a crucial piece of business in keeping Reid at the club after his strong displays in the Premier League this term.
