It began on Tuesday night, when Manchester City were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona. Luis Suarez scored twice, but Sergio Aguero did at last pull one back for the hosts. It could have been much worse for the Premier League champions, had Lionel Messi converted a late penalty.
The following evening, Arsenal went into their game against AS Monaco has heavy favourites, but were left stunned as the French side ran out 3-1 winners. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Dimitar Berbatov made it 2-0, before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pulled one back, but Yannic Ferreira Carrasco had the final say with a late third.
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both fell to defeat on Thursday. Tolgay Arslan scored the only goal of the night in Istanbul, before Dejan Lovren missed the decisive penalty in the resulting penalty shoot-out, as Besiktas progressed. Meanwhile, Mario Gomez and Mohamed Salah were on target as Spurs were well beaten by Fiorentina.
Everton were the only team to provide the Premier League with something to shout about, and even they fell behind, before a Romelu Lukaku brace and a strike from Kevin Mirallas saw the Toffees past Young Boys from Switzerland, 7-2 on aggregate.
Scottish giants Celtic also went out, losing 1-0 to Inter Milan.
