The Dutchman reportedly attempted to bring Navas to Old Trafford after the Costa Rican’s string of impressive performances during last year’s World Cup, helping the team progress out a group consisting of Italy, Uruguay and England, before beating Greece in the last 16.
But it was perhaps in the quarter-final when Navas really made an impression on van Gaal, keeping a clean sheet against his Netherlands side that had ruthlessly scored 12 goals in just four games before that point.
Following the tournament, the new United made an attempt to approach Navas about a move, only to be told that the 28-year-old had already signed a deal with the Spanish giants for around £8m.
However, Navas has been kept out of the Madrid team this season by the resurgence of Iker Casillas, thus he has only made two league appearances, which may reportedly tempt van Gaal to make another move this summer.
It is unclear where Navas will feature in the pecking order at United though, with David de Gea expected to sign a new deal and has former Barcelona stopper Victor Valdes waiting in the wings.
