New Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has reminded the Premier League that his win ratio during his time at Tottenham Hotspur manager is still superior to his successor, Mauricio Pochettino’s, ahead of his first match in charge at Villa Park, at home to Stoke City.

The former Blackburn and Spurs winger did credit the Argentine manager with continuing to give youth a chance at White Hart Lane, though Sherwood hinted that he deserved credit for the excellent development of England’s new prodigy Harry Kane. According to their former manager, the young target man would not have had such a rich vein of form, had Sherwood not allowed him to go out on loan last season.
With Aston Villa sitting 18th in the Premier League, having scored only 12 goals, the new manager will be hoping to work the same magic with misfiring Belgium international striker Christian Benteke. The striker has scored just three goals in all competitions this year as opposed to bagging 39 times over the past two seasons.
This Saturday’s Villa Park bow will be Sherwood’s first match since a final day Spurs win against the Villains at White Hart Lane, which left him with the best win ratio from the past five managers of the club. Sherwood’s 59% win ratio trumps Pochettino’s 52%, though they have both guided Spurs to 6th in the table.
Reported in the Daily Mail, Sherwood said, “The risk of failure at Tottenham was us dropping out of the Europa League slots. I don’t think anyone’s managed to better my win record, not even this guy Pochettino – and everyone’s talking about how well he’s done.
“I think he has done a really good job there, but mine’s still up there to be shot at. He’s inherited a good bunch of young players who were developed by myself.
“He’s willing to play them as well, there’s a lot of big stars there, he could have discarded (Ryan) Mason and (Nabil) Bentaleb but he’s not done that so fair play to him. I respect him for that.”
Villa are without a win in 10 games and will need their new manager to inspire confidence into his side if they are to have any chance of staying up this season.
