The Serbian saw a straight red in Liverpool’s final Champions League group game with Basel after appearing to strike the face of Behrang Safari.
The suspension means Markovic will definitely miss his side’s last-32 Europa League ties against Turkish club Besiktas, and – if Liverpool qualify for the next round – he will also be ineligible for both legs of the last 16 matches too.
The Reds summer signing had only been on the pitch for 15 minutes when the fairly innocuous incident occurred.
It look as if Markovic had only brushed the face of Safari when attempting to hand him off.
But the £20 million man from Benfica was sent off as Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League altogether following a 1-1 draw with the Swiss club at Anfield.
UEFA only allows appeals for red cards in instances of mistaken identity and so the Merseyside club were powerless to prevent a ban.
However, the Liverpool winger might get himself in further hot water after he responded to the ban with this tweet:
