Louis Van Gaal Tells Wayne Rooney ‘If You Don’t Like Midfield Role, Speak Up’

Wayne Rooney has been deployed as a midfielder despite suggestions he is better up front…

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has challenged Wayne Rooney to speak up if he doesn’t like his new midfield role at Old Trafford, reported in the Daily Star.

The England and United captain has been playing in a much deeper role recently, which has even seen him as a holding player, as van Gaal looks to try and fit in all of his big names into one match day XI.

Despite the Dutchman’s tactical rethink, Rooney has been out of sorts since slotting into his new position, not having a shot on goal this calendar year and without a goal since Boxing Day.

Van Gaal has claimed he is playing the ex-Everton man in the role as he doesn’t trust anyone else in his side there, begging the question why he didn’t dip into the transfer market this January.

England manager Roy Hodgson is reportedly worried that his star striker is being played out of position, and has planned talks with the Old Trafford chief to try and come to a solution.

It remains to be seen whether Rooney will speak with his club manager about a possible move back to a more attacking role, though he rarely showed restraint with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, following several high profile bust ups.
