The German tactician, who has also managed his national side and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, has earned many plaudits for his work with the USA, and has been linked with big jobs in the recent past.
Villa could now look to him as they ponder life after Lambert, who became increasingly unpopular at Villa Park after some woeful form this season.
Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Tim Sherwood is also a leading contender, though he has also been recently linked with Queens Park Rangers.
