There have been a few sides who raised eyebrows with their appearance in the top division over time…
Yesterday saw QPR climb out of the bottom three with their first away win of the season, beating Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light with goals from Leroy Fer and Bobby Zamora.
QPR were replaced by Aston Villa, who have scored only 12 goals all season and lost 2-0 away at Hull City, who had the poorest home record in the league which has subsequently led to Paul Lambert’s sacking.

As the fight for Premier League survival hots up, we look at six of the worst sides to ever play in England’s top division.
Watford (1999-00)
The Hornets had a woeful campaign this season under former England boss Graham Taylor, finishing on a measly 24 points getting relegated with a whimper despite beating Liverpool and Chelsea. After they did beat the Blues on 18th September, they would go on to win three more all season with poor showings defensively and offensively, their top scorer mustered only six all year.
Ipswich Town (1994-95)
In one of the rare Premier League seasons with 22 teams makes Ipswich’s total of 27 points look even poorer. George Burley’s men lost 9-0 away at Manchester United, a Premier League record biggest ever win, and only won seven matches all season.
Sunderland (2002-03)
The Black Cats recorded the longest losing streak by any English top division side this season with a 17 game spell in which they lost every single game. The shock with this relegation was huge slide which had taken place with striker Kevin Phillips bagging the European Golden Shoe after scoring 30 goals in the 1999-00 season, also Sunderland finishing an impressive seventh in both that season and the following one.
QPR (2012-13)
While there have definitely been poorer sides in Premier League history, there may not have been many quite as disappointing as QPR of this season. The R’s had signed 14 players, including Brazil international goalkeeper Julio Cesar, and spent £22.5 million in a bid to secure their Premier League future. The big name players failed spectacularly and many cited a lack of passion and big pay packets as reasons.
Sunderland (2005-06)
Having been promoted back to the Premier League as champions of the second tier with Mick McCarthy leading his side to a 94 point haul, Sunderland fans could have been forgiven for thinking it could be different this time. They were wrong.
Their total of 15 points at the end of the season was a record low and Arsenal’s Thierry Henry ended up scoring more goals than the entire Sunderland team.
Derby (2007-08)
Sunderland’s 15 point haul was record breaking, until Derby’s promotion and subsequent embarrassing showing in the Premier League. The team won one game all season and finished with 11 points. The team went 38 games without a win, stretching into the following season, which is a run which has been unsurpassed in English football history.
