Ronald Koeman’s side are now third in the Premier League following a 1-0 win away at QPR coming courtesy of a late, late show from Saido Mane.

With Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all dropping points, the Saints were propelled into the top three this weekend but Koeman tried to claim that Southampton were looking over their shoulders.

Fonte took a different stance, claiming the big sides have a lot of pressure to deal with. He said, “Those teams have all the pressure in the world.”

The Portuguese defender went on to speak about the self-belief at St, Mary’s, “For us, no one really believes in us, no one really thinks that we’re going to get there. But we as players and the group believe in ourselves and we’re going to be fighting for that.

“It’s going to be like this until the end I think. As we said before the game, we just need to keep going game by game, keep digging, grinding the results out and we’ll see in the end where that takes us.”

Ronald Koeman also said that Matt Targett’s condition was ‘under control’ after he was taken to hospital following a first half head collision.
