The Scotland international linked up with the Baggies on deadline day after finding it difficult to break in to the first team at Old Trafford under new manager Louis van Gaal. It was his old boss who told him to join the Midlands side, with the United legend apparently having a “great” relationship with current West Brom head coach Tony Pulis.
“I spoke to him definitely,” said Fletcher ahead of an expected debut at Burnley this weekend.
“Why wouldn’t you? When I was making the decision, I bounced a few things off him. When someone has been such an influence on you throughout your career, you have to use these people. We had a fantastic chat.”
He added, “I know he has a great relationship with Tony Pulis. He didn’t necessarily recommend it but we talked about the pros and cons of different clubs and he could not speak highly enough of the Albion.”
The 31-year-old only made five starts for the Mancunian side before leaving in mid-season transfer window, and hopes to gain more match time at his new club. Fletcher is a former favourite of Ferguson, having been a regular in the side when the Scot was in charge of the Red Devils.
