Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard Among Ten Brilliant Premier League Players To Never Have Won The Title

Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard will never win the Premier League title, despite being one of the division’s best ever players…

The Merseyside and North London derbies will be headlining the Premier League fixture list this weekend, but it’s been over a decade since any of the four teams involved won the English top flight.

All four teams currently sit outside the division’s top four, so while these two games will likely be the best of the next 48 hours, it will be Chelsea and Manchester City moving further clear at the top of the table.

The game with Everton takes on extra significance for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who will be playing in his final Merseyside derby. His side are currently some way off the pace in the league, but he will most certainly go down in the record books as one of the most talented players never to win the Premier League title.

Click through the pages below to see who else makes our list of brilliant players who never won the famous trophy:

10) Xabi Alonso (Liverpool)

The Spanish midfield maestro came within touching distance of winning the Premier League title under Rafael Benitez, but was never quite able to manage it. Eventually moved to Real Madrid, where he did enjoy plenty of success.

9) David Ginola (Tottenham Hotspur)

The former Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Everton winger is perhaps best remembered for his spell in North London, where he became a cult hero at White Hart Lane. The Frenchman was a League Cup winner in 1999, but never came close to winning the Premier League.

8) Brad Friedel (Blackburn Rovers / Aston Villa / Tottenham Hotspur)

The veteran goalkeeper has enjoyed a wonderful Premier League career, but only has a 2002 League Cup winners medal from his time with Blackburn to show for his 668 club matches; the American deserved more for his efforts.

7) Gareth Bale (Tottenham Hotspur)

The world’s most expensive player has played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s success over the last 18 months – scoring in three final victories. Unfortunately, he never came close to winning the title with Tottenham.

6) Matt Le Tissier (Southampton)

The iconic midfielder maintained his loyalty to Southampton throughout his club career, playing 539 games on the South Coast. Despite his success at the club, he was never able to guide them to a trophy.

5) Jamie Carragher (Liverpool)

Another one-club man and one of the best defenders in Liverpool history. Carragher helped the Reds win almost every major honour apart from the Premier League, so how he must wish he’d carried on for one more season before retiring and helped his side get over the line last term.

4) Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal / Chelsea)

The Spaniard came close on several occasions to guiding Arsenal to success in the top flight. After re-joining the Premier League with Chelsea at the start of this season, he’ll be hoping to finally pick up his first winners medal later this year.

3) Marcel Desailly (Chelsea)

The French World Cup winning centre back played for Chelsea between 1998 and 2004, leaving shortly before Roman Abramovich’s money powered the Blues to Premier League glory in 2005 under Jose Mourinho.

2) Gianfranco Zola (Chelsea)

Despite all Chelsea’s success over the last decade, many Blues fans will tell you that the Italian striker is the club’s best ever player. Zola scored 80 goals in seven seasons at the club, winning six major honours.

1) Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

What more can be said about the Liverpool skipper? How long will that slip against Chelsea live in his memory. Gerrard has inspired Champions League and FA Cup victories, but was never able to break the Reds’ title drought.
