Liverpool Roundup: Striker Target Available For £20m, Gerrard Wants New Contract For Sterling And More

Saturday’s biggest stories for the Reds.

West Bromwich Albion will sell Liverpool target Saido Berahino in the summer for £20m

Both the Reds and Tottenham Hotspur have been put on alert as the Baggies finally have accepted they are going to lose Berahino, according to the Daily Mail.

The 21-year-old has made himself unpopular among the West Brom hierarchy after claiming he was considering ‘moving on to bigger things’ at the end of the season.

The Birmingham club are therefore willing to part company with Berahino, but only if a potential buyer pays them upwards of £15m.

Captain Steven Gerrard urges club to reward Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling with new contracts

Much of the news around Anfield has focused on Gerrard his term after the skipper announced he would be leaving for LA Galaxy at the end of the campaign.

Yet the 34-year-old doesn’t want to leave his boyhood side in disarray and has urged the club to give new deals to both Henderson and Sterling in order to secure long-term success.

“Those players, Sterling, Henderson – Coutinho and [Daniel] Sturridge who just signed up – they are the ones who are going to deliver, so it’s vital they get them done [new contracts] before it is too late,” Gerrard was quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

Mamadou Sakho never considered leaving the Reds despite derby day walkout

Sakho has come a long way since the last Merseyside derby with Everton earlier this term, in a game that saw the defender storm away from the ground after being snubbed by manager Brendan Rodgers.

Since then the Frenchman has become an integral part of Rodgers’ team and alongside Emre Can and Martin Skrtel makes up a back three that has been brilliant this year and the 24-year-old says he never had any doubts about staying.

“That was a bad moment for me, a difficult time. I think it was natural that I was disappointed because I want to play for this shirt and I am ready to fight for the club,” Sakho was quoted by the Guardian.

Gerrard ready for derby day ‘banter’

It will be the last ever Merseyside derby for the midfielder on Saturday evening before he jets off to America to join MLS franchise LA Galaxy in the summer.

Despite the fact it is his last ever appearance in the prestigious fixture, Gerrard expects nothing less than hostility from the Toffees faithful and is looking forward to it.

“I doubt it very much. I love the banter with Everton fans. It’s what it’s all about. It’s about rivalries. I don’t mind it at all. Bring it on, as far as I’m concerned,” the former England captain was quoted by BBC Sport.

Sturridge return will improve all the other attackers says club favourite John Barnes

After being so prolific in front of goal in the Premier League last season it has been a very different story this term following the sale of Luis Suarez to FC Barcelona and Sturridge’s long-term injury.

The England international made a goal-scoring return to the first team last weekend in a 2-0 win over West Ham United and Barnes thinks the England international will help all the other forwards at the club.

“Daniel will get more goals, and it will bring more assists for his team-mates. Him coming back will improve every other forward player,” the ex-England international told the Liverpool Echo.
