The Sun reports that the United boss wants to sign the man dubbed the ‘Dutch Cristiano Ronaldo’ before any other major European sides can snap him up.
Here’s 10 things Red Devils fans need to know about their potential new signing:
1. Depay was born in Moordrecht, Holland on 13th February 1994 – after joining local side VV Moordrecht at the age of six, he then switched to Sparta Rotterdam three years later before signing for current side PSV at the age of 12.
2. He was given his debut at just 17 by interim manager Phillip Cocu and hasn’t looked back since.
3. In fact on his return to PSV as boss, Cocu said that Depay was the ‘Dutch Cristiano Ronaldo’ due to his playing style and goal scoring exploits.
4. …though perhaps this might be more to do with his cocky attitude and his single minded determination to make it to the top of the game. So much so that he calls himself the ‘dream chaser’.
5. The PSV star had a troubled childhood and his parents , a Ghanaian father and Dutch mother, divorced when he was just four years old.
6. Depay also dropped his surname from his shirt in 2012 because of the absence of his father during his childhood and the difficult relationship the two have.
7. He has a personal life coach who has described the forward as “very angry” due to the death of his grandfather the day after his 15th birthday.
8. In tribute to his grandfather, Depay has a tattoo on his left arm, one among many that he continues to flaunt on Instagram.
9. …and among them is one on the inside of his lip.
10. He was selected by Louis van Gaal for the Dutch 2014 World Cup squad where he caught the now United boss’ eye, scoring two goals and becoming the youngest ever Dutchman to score in the competition.
