Speaking ahead of the North London Derby, Wenger said that the he was very happy with the business the Gunners had done in the January transfer window and confirmed the two had extended their current deals.
The Frenchman will be particularly happy give that both players were out of contract in the summer. Akpom is thought to have signed until at least 2020 and Coquelin a new four and a half year deal until 2019.
The turnaround in Coquelin’s Arsenal career has been something of a marvel since his recall from a loan with Championship side Charlton Athletic in December.
The feisty midfielder has been almost undroppable since coming into the first XI after his return and his series of combative displays, particularly against the likes of Manchester City, in defensive midfield have convinced the club to offer him a new deal.
The extension of Akpom’s contract is also something of a coup for the club after a large number of clubs were said to be in for the talented youngster.
The youngsterwas holding out on committing to the North London club and wanted assurances over playing time.
However, with three strikers shipped out on-loan in January and an increase in substitute appearances it appears the 19 year old believes he can make a success of himself at the Emirates.
