An image of van Gaal prowling the Old Trafford touchline inadvertently revealed Fletcher’s name had been printed on the Manchester United team sheet, crossed out with market pen and Ashley Young scrawled on below it with biro.
Just one problem with that: Fletcher joined West Bromwich Albion on a free deal on deadline day, signing a two and a half year contract with Tony Pulis’ side.
Perhaps van Gaal just wasn’t prepared for Fletcher’s exit from Old Trafford after an almost 20 year stay with the club.
And he wasn’t the only late departure from Old Trafford; Wilfried Zaha joined Crystal Palace on a permanent deal, Jesse Lingard was loaned to Derby and Mernick Vermijl went to Sheffield Wednesday on loan.
However, 21 year old Bolton defender Andy Kellett did come in on-loan until the end of the season.
