Top 10 Most Tweeted Rumours Of the January Transfer Window: Lionel Messi To Chelsea, Mats Hummels and Liverpool Striker Bid Feature

Shame none of these happened or Jim White day might have been slightly more bearable.

Well that was a bust. It’s Jim White you’ve got to feel sorry for after such a forgettable transfer deadline day.

Not much of note occurred on transfer deadline day, bar Chelsea’s big money signing of Juan Cuadrado, and things could have turned out quite differently if some of the crazy speculation had turned out to be accurate.

With that in mind Twitter has released the ten most tweeted about rumours of the January window.

Do you think any of these deals might happen in the summer?

10) Winston Reid: West Ham United > Arsenal

Arsenal were linked with a move for the Kiwi who is out of contract in the summer after they so badly needed reinforcements in defence.

However, with the Gunners signing Gabriel from Villarreal, you have to think any future moves for centre-backs are dead in the water.

9) Morgan Schneiderlin: Southampton > Arsenal

The Gunners soft centre has been somewhat solidified in recent weeks with the impressive performances for Francis Coquelin so their need for a midfield commander has somewhat diminished.

You think it would have required a monumental bid to make the Saints relinquish the Frenchman and perhaps now Arsenal can afford to wait until the summer if they truly want Schneiderlin when his price will presumably have fallen to something a little more reasonable.

8) Danny Ings: Burnley > Liverpool

With flops Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert causing a stink at Anfield so bad it was making people’s eyes water it seemed inevitable Rodgers would enter the transfer market for a replacement.

But with Sturridge returning at the weekend and immediately showing the Reds what they’ve been missing perhaps Liverpool can afford to wait until the summer if they really want Ings.

7) Rickie Lambert: Liverpool > Aston Villa

With an attack that has at this current time gone 10 hours without scoring it’s no wonder Villa were panicking in the closing hours of the transfer window and even attempted to capture the misfiring Lambert.

However, the former Southampton man was reported to opt out of an move to stay at his boyhood club to fight for his place.

6) Marco Reus: Borussia Dortmund > Bayern Munich

Whilst it did seem inevitable that Reus would become the latest in a long line of Dortmund stars racking up at Bayern Munich, the latest reports seem to claim the Bavarians have pulled out of signing the German with Real Madrid and Arsenal set to duke it out.

5) Gareth Bale: Real Madrid > Manchester United

It’s a good job United have signed a reported record kit deal with adidas for next season because the figures being touted for Bale’s potential move to Old Trafford were quite staggering and almost double his £85 million move just a season and a half ago.

Though with Real’s ever flippant fans letting their feelings be known every week, perhaps Bale might just think he deserves better than being booed for having a shot on goal.

4) Paul Pogba: Juventus > Chelsea

Mino Railoa seemed to enjoy fuelling speculation his client could be on the move at some point, he just neglected to mention when.

But with the former Manchester United star attracting rumours almost daily it only seems natural speculative enquiries could turn into an outright bidding war in the summer.

3) Mats Hummels: Borussia Dortmund > Manchester United

Can this one just happen so we don’t have to hear or talk about it anymore?

The BVB defender has been linked with and Old Trafford switch for almost two seasons but with the talent he possesses it’s easy to see why.

2) David de Gea: Manchester United > Real Madrid

De Gea has been targeted by Madrid as the long term replacement to veteran Iker Casillas but United are more than keen to ensure they keep a firm hold of one of the world’s best keepers; and are even prepared to put a release clause in a new contract according to reports.

But this one looks like it’s set to run and run until De Gea himself makes some form of an announcement on the issue.

1) Lionel Messi: Barcelona > Chelsea

“When you look at the numbers being mentioned around Messi, I would think it’s an impossible deal for any club working within the Financial Fair Play rules,” said Chelsea assistant coach Steve Holland.

True, Steve.

But with the Blues negotiating prowess on full display as they sell second string stars for some quite staggering amounts – just see the fees accrued for the likes of Schurrle, Luiz, Bertrand, De Bruyne et al – it wouldn’t be a surprise if Chelsea somehow managed to wrangle a swap deal for Lionel Messi with John Obi Mikel.
