The infamously injury prone midfielder thinks that the Red Devils should be looking to get someone who has more of a physical presence to lead their back line. The German is more well known for his ball-playing qualities than for out and out defending.
The 26-year-old is currently part of a Dortmund side which is bottom of the Bundesliga, and the ex-England international thinks that shows that the World Cup winner is not the type of player that United should be chasing.
The defender has not been blameless for Jurgen Klopp’s team’s slide from the top in his 14 appearances this season.
“He’s a super, super ball-playing centre-back but I don’t think he can defend, he’s too slow,” he told BT Sport.
“He’s Franz Beckenbauer, the new version, a super passer but I think that if I’m Manchester United I want [Nemanja] Vidic, I want [Vincent] Kompany.
“I think he’s a nice football player, he’s easy on the eye, but United need somebody physical, a presence. He’s the captain of Borussia Dortmund, they’re last in the Bundesliga. Is that the measuring stick for Manchester United? I’m not so sure.”
It is expected that Man Utd will make an approach for the centre-back in the summer, despite what Hargreaves has said.
