Chelsea transfer news
Both sides have benefitted hugely from investment froma mega-rich owners in recent history, and now have some of the best players in the world at their disposal, many of whom form a pretty strong team of bench-warmers and backups here. Read on to see who makes our combined XI!
Goalkeeper: Petr Cech v Willy Caballero
Two of the best backup goalkeepers you’ll see, Petr Cech and Willy Caballero would surely be number one at most other Premier League clubs. The world class Cech just edges it into our team.
Vote: Cech
Right-back: Cesar Azpilicueta v Bacary Sagna
Signed on a free from Arsenal this summer, Bacary Sagna has made little impact at Manchester City having previously been one of the finest full-backs in the country. Cesar Azpilicueta is perhaps better at left-back these days, but is Chelsea’s only real backup to Branislav Ivanovic.
Vote: Sagna
Left-back: Nathan Ake v Aleksandar Kolarov
One is a fairly untried youngster and the other is an experienced left-back with a superb left foot. Manchester City’s Aleksandar Kolarov is usually behind Gael Clichy but makes it into our team.
Vote: Kolarov
Centre-backs: Kurt Zouma & Andreas Christensen vs Eliaquim Mangala & Dedryck Boyata
Two of the most promising young defenders in Europe prior to their moves to the Premier League this season, Eqliaquim Mangala and Kurt Zouma is our preferred centre-back partnership in this bench warmers’ XI.
Vote: Mangala & Zouma
Central midfield: John Obi Mikel & Ramires vs Fernando & Frank Lampard
Four fine players, but painfully for Chelsea fans Manchester City’s luxury midfielder Frank Lampard forms a nice partnership with Ramires in this particular selection.
Vote: Ramires & Lampard
Right midfield: Mohamed Salah vs James Milner
Two very different players with differing roles, but James Milner is probably the more useful of these two and is generally used more often by City than Mohamed Salah is by Chelsea.
Vote: Milner
Left midfield: Andre Schurrle vs Samir Nasri
Two fine attacking midfield players on their day, Andre Schurrle and Samir Nasri are just a little too inconsistent to start regularly for either of these sides, though the German international is our preferred choice of the two.
Vote: Schurrle
Strikers: Loic Remy & Didier Drogba vs Edin Dzeko & Stevan Jovetic
A fine selection of backup strikers indeed, even if Didier Drogba is now 36. Any combination of these would work fairly well, but Edin Dzeko is our pick to partner the Ivory Coast legend.
Vote: Drogba & Dzeko
