While Brendan Rodgers’ side have reportedly had their initial approach for the player rejected, reports in the Liverpool Echo claim that a potential move could still take place in the summer.
On Thursday evening several sources were implying that the player’s switch to Anfield was an imminent one, but a club statement from the Clarets earlier today has seemingly rubbished those suggestions.
Despite the apparent apprehension surrounding the move, Ings could be a more useful signing for Liverpool than is being perceived, especially considering their current problems in attack.
Luis Suarez’s departure and Daniel Sturridge’s ongoing injury issues have seen Raheem Sterling spend the vast majority of the season playing as the club’s make-shift striker, while Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini, and Mario Balotelli have managed just three goals between them.
Ings scored 26 goals last season, while he has also struck seven times in 19 games so far this campaign; despite only just coming back from a long-term injury. Those goals have come in a side battling at the wrong end of the table, which make them that much more impressive.
The last time Liverpool purchased a young English striker, there was initially something of a mixed reaction to a player that had failed to make the grade at both Chelsea and Manchester City.
Sturridge has rewarded Liverpool’s faith with 36 goals in 52 games however, and is now ranked among the club’s best attacking players in recent history. While Ings is not yet in the same league as the 25-year-old, he certainly has plenty of potential.
Brendan Rodgers has taken chances on a number of young players already during his time on Merseyside, and the Northern Irishman has been well rewarded. If Liverpool sign Ings at the end of the season on a free transfer and on low wages, what do they have to lose?
