The Portuguese announced his potential candidacy for the FIFA Presidency earlier this week.

Luis Figo has confirmed he is an official candidate for the FIFA presidency after sending six nominations from member associations to the world football’s governing body.

The deadline for applications was yesterday and potential candidates needed the backing of at least five member states to get their name on the ballot paper in May’s presidential election.

And Figo took to Twitter to declare that his candidacy is now official after receiving the backing of six football associations and proceeded to thank his friends “across the football family” for backing his campaign.

Figo is now confirmed as the first alternative candidate to Sepp Blatter whilst the likes of Michael van Praag and Jerome Champagne are yet to officially announce if their bids have also been successful.

The English FA confirmed earlier today that they were officially backing Prince Ali of the Jordanian FA as a candidate, though it remains to be seen whether he has also acquired the requisite nominations.

Figo, however, is yet to declare which associations have actually backed him.
