Reports in the Daily Mail confirm that the Scottish international was closing in on a move to Sam Allardyce’s side on a free transfer, but Fletcher could now have to see out the remainder of his existing deal with the Red Devils.

Fletcher, whose contract expires at the end of the season, had been told he could leave on a free this month, while he was also welcome to remain at the club until the summer, but United won’t pay up his contract and let him leave for nothing.

The 30-year-old has been with United since joining the club at the age of 11 and was named Louis van Gaal’s vice captain at the start of the season. However, he’s since failed to hold down a regular first team spot under the Dutchman and was replaced in the role by Michael Carrick last month.

West Bromwich Albion and Valencia are also interested in Fletcher, but neither are likely to pay United the fee they are looking for to waive the remainder of their player’s contract.
