The Ghanaian played for the Stamford Bridge outfit for nearly nine years between 2005 and 2014, and formed such an attachment to the club that he is apparently now unable to play against them.

This is unlike Frank Lampard, who was a legend for the West Londoners, but could now line up against them for a second time with Manchester City in their next Premier League match.

“Essien will not play in the Premier League for any club other than Chelsea,” Essien’s agent Fabien Piveteau told Calciomercato.

“We had offers from West Bromwich Albion and Queens Park Rangers but we refused.”

The 32-year-old has been at Serie A giants AC Milan this campaign, but has failed to make much of an impact.

Essien has only made nine appearances for the Milanese, with five of them being starts. He has also missed out on his national team squad for the African Cup of Nations. This gesture seems a rare example of loyalty in the modern game.
