Hummels has delivered a huge blow to Manchester United…

Manchester United target Mats Hummels has claimed he doesn’t need Champions League football to be happy and has reiterated he has no intention of responding to speculation regarding interest from other clubs.

Hummels recognises that the absence of Champions League football may tempt players to head for the exit door, yet the Borussia Dortmund captain is already looking ahead to next season – in which he claims the side will be ‘super’.

“Maybe we indeed lose players should we not qualify for Champions League, but what I can already tell you is that should we not lose 15 players at once, we’ll still have a super team next season,” the 26 year old was quoted by ESPN.

Hummels’ comments are guaranteed to endear the defender further to the Dortmund faithful, who will be hoping that their skipper does not leave the club this month amid interest from Premier League sides United and Arsenal.

The Red Devils had been keen to make the most of the German side’s poor season thus far and were rumoured to be readying a £35m offer for the World Cup winner. The Gunners are also believed to be keeping tabs.

However, Hummels’ recent comments suggest that the centre-back is happy to remain with Dortmund, even with the club sitting second from bottom in the Bundesliga.
