Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann says Arsenal should sign one of the Bender twins – with Lars playing for Bayer Leverkusen and Sven at Borussia Dortmund currently.

The Gunners are on the hunt for a defensive midfielder and Hamann believes that this is exactly what the team needs to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City and that they could do a lot worse than the German international duo.
“What Wenger hasn’t got – and hasn’t had for years – is a defensive midfielder of the calibre of Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel at Chelsea; or Fernando and Fernandinho at City,” the German was quoted by the Mirror.
“Patrick Vieira was the master. He was the best in the business for years and one of the main reasons why Arsenal were so successful.
“So, I can’t understand why Arsene Wenger hasn’t addressed the problem. It’s been holding his team back for too long now and it’s the reason why the title is between City and Chelsea
“For me, Arsenal would be much better served, going for one of the Bender brothers, especially Lars.
“Either of those boys would give Wenger something he hasn’t got in midfield.Someone who can read the game, is naturally defensively minded and who will thrive, operating in front of the back four, making sure Arsenal don’t get exposed.”
The North Londoners have been heavily linked with Lars Bender in the past, with the 25-year-old playing exactly the role Hamann speaks of for Leverkusen – sitting in front of the back four.
Sven is perhaps more adventurous going forward, but could still add some much needed grit to Arsene Wenger’s midfield and even the Frenchman himself has admitted new signings are needed in the area.
Most fans at the Emirates Stadium probably wouldn’t disagree with Hamann and it now remains to be seen whether Wenger actually enters the transfer market this January to address the problem.
