The 32-year-old only left White Hart Lane for the MLS last January, but has made a quick return to England after a successful spell with Toronto, for whom he scored 12 goals in 17 appearances.

Gus Poyet had been looking to add some firepower upfront to aid his side’s fight against relegation this season, with the likes of Jozy Altidore, Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham not doing the goods so far this term.

Defoe has a great scoring record throughout his career in English football, having also shone for the likes of West Ham United and Portsmouth, though he is best remembered for his time with Tottenham.

Defoe had two spells with the north London club and scored 90 Premier League goals in that time, earning a reputation for being a reliable goal-poacher.

Sunderland will now hope his accuracy in front of goal can help them stay up this season.
