The Reds legend recently agreed a deal with Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy to join them when his contract ends in the summer.

However, there is the opportunity for him to return to Anfield on loan while the MLS is on a break during the winter months of next season. Players such as David Beckham and Thierry Henry have done this in the past whilst playing for American teams.

Ayre has left the opportunity for this to happen open, and even promised that there will always be a role open at the club for the former England captain. This could mean that the midfielder will be able to return as part of the managerial staff or as one of the playing squad in the future.

“I’ve said openly to Steven and his representatives, as have Brendan and the owners, that we see Steven as part of the family,” he told Liverpool radio station City Talk.

“The fact that he’s leaving at the end of the season doesn’t mean it’s the last we’ll see of him at Liverpool.

“What that means, the details aren’t known yet, but we will keep a regular dialogue with him and I hope we will see him here again in the long term.

“It’s conceivable. It happens a lot in MLS and it’s something we talked to Steven and his representatives about. You can’t have someone who has so much of the club’s DNA in them and just expect that it will go away.”
