Blind admitted that the United squad were surprised by Radamel Falcao’s exclusion from Louis van Gaal’s squad for the game against Southampton on Sunday, but reasoned that the decision would act as something of a wake-up call.

The Dutch international, who was quoted by the Daily Star, reminded his fellow United players no one has a divine right to start and the team must always come first, saying: “The prices (transfer fees) in the team are expensive, and the manager has said that as well.

“So you have to train, every day, very hard to show yourself and show that you really want to play. We are one team, we have to do it with each other, whichever eleven the coach chooses.

Speaking about the 1-0 loss to Southampton, he added: “It’s very disappointing. When we get the ball we have to be more patient and wait for the chances to come. We are supporting each other and it feels like a really great team.

“We have to bounce back, we have to stand up as a team with each other and do the best we can in training, every day, and have a good week because we need a win next weekend.”
