Liverpool transfer news
The Swiss international was thought to be a top target for the Reds as Brendan Rodgers sought to improve his attacking midfield options, but he instead opted to make the move to Serie A based on a ‘gut feeling’ about the project at the San Siro.
Liverpool have been dealt some other big transfer blows in recent history, with five other big names notably turning down the chance to sign for the Merseyside giants and moving elsewhere instead.

A player Brendan Rodgers thought would be ‘perfect’ for Liverpool, Willian eventually made the move to Chelsea after quitting Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, and has been a big hit at Stamford Bridge so far.
3) Gylfi Sigurdsson (Swansea City)
Managed by Brendan Rodgers at his old club Swansea City, Gylfi Sigurdsson rejected the chance to work with the Northern Irishman again at Anfield, instead moving for an ill-fated time at Tottenham Hotspur, which has now led him to moving back to Swansea this season.
4) Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Borussia Dortmund)
Liverpool were also hot on the trail of Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan last summer before he opted instead to join Borussia Dortmund, though he has not proven a big hit in the Bundesliga and may have been a bullet dodged by the Reds.
Another player who attracted a lot of hype prior to his big move, Mohamed Salah eventually chose to join Chelsea over Liverpool last January as the Reds took too long over a deal for the Egyptian, who is now little more than a bench warmer at Stamford Bridge.
