Manuel Neuer – Germany and Bayern Munich
Neuer has enjoyed an outstanding year for his club and country – playing a key role in the league and cup wins for Bayern Munich along with Germany’s World Cup win.
Sergio Ramos – Spain and Real Madrid
Sergio Ramos’ two goals against Bayern Munich in the semi-final of the Champions League helped Real Madrid reach their first Champions League final in 12 years.
Philipp Lahm – Germany and Bayern Munich
The year 2014 saw the Bayern midfielder captain his side to the double and later became only the fourth German skipper to lift the World Cup, playing every minute of the campaign – ending his international career on a high by announcing his international retirement following the tournament.
David Alaba – Austria and Bayern Munich
Alaba was first-choice left-back at German giants Bayern Munich as they went on to win the double during the 2013/14 season, and helped the side reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Diego Godin – Uruguay and Atletico Madrid
Diego Godin’s headed goal on the last day of the 2013/14 season to earn a 1-1 draw against Barcelona sealed Atletico Madrid’s first league title in 18 years.
Midfield
Arjen Robben – Netherlands and Bayern Munich
Arjen Robben was instrumental in helping Bayern to the league and cup double for a stunning third time in five seasons, the winger was a stand-out performer in the Netherlands World Cup run to the semi-finals.
Angel di Maria – Argentina and Manchester United
Angel di Maria’s final season with Real Madrid ended in Champions League glory with the midfielder putting in a man of the match performance in the final, and became Britain’s most expensive transfer in a £75m deal to Old Trafford.
Toni Kroos – Germany and Real Madrid
The 25 year old was another key player in Bayern Munich’s re-writing of the history books in their double winning season, Kroos scored in the 3-1 win against Hertha BSC Berlin to secure the title with seven games to spare.
Forwards
Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal and Real Madrid
Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed 30 goals for the fourth successive La Liga season in 2013/14, scoring 17 goals in the Champions League to help Real Madrid to the title for a tenth time. The Portugal star beat Neuer and Robben to the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award in August, and received the Order of Prince Henry by Portuguese president Aníbal Cavaco Silva in January to cap off an outstanding year.
Lionel Messi – Argentina and Barcelona
While Barcelona missed out any titles last season, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was as prolific as ever, continuing to break records and receive individual recognition. The Argentinian became the Spanish giant’s record goalscorer, as well as the top El Classico scorer. Was named player of the tournament for the 2014 World Cup, helping Argentina to their first World Cup final in since 1990.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Swedan and Paris Saint-Germain
Ibrahimovic helped Paris Saint-Germain to a second successive Ligue 1 title and the Champions League quarter-finals, grabbing a superb 41 goals in the 2013/14 season, with ten coming in Europe. Won his 100th cap for Sweden in September after becoming the first Sweden player to net 50 goals.
