Szczesny’s starting spot at the Gunners is believed to be under threat after his latest stunt, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger reportedly on the lookout for a new keeper this January.
The French manager spoke out in support of his player however, and assured him that he would not be dropped simply because of one mistake.
“Of course Szczesny has apologised. He is a serious boy who works very hard but he has made a mistake,” he said.
“I have not selected my team for Stoke and I will take everything into account. What happened in the dressing-room should stay private, but it hasn’t.”
Wenger’s defence has struggled somewhat this season, and the team have at times been caught leaking unnecessary goals. The fault can not be entirely pinned on Szczesny however, who has put in a number of fantastic performances throughout the 2014/15 campaign.
Deputy keeper David Ospina stepped in for the FA Cup clash with Hull City, and performed well during his side’s 2-0 win. It remains to be seen whether he will displace the Pole in the Premier League however.
