Louis van Gaal could well do with a strong defensive leader and given just how far his Westfalenstadion side have fallen it’s plausible the World Cup winner would consider a January exit.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have finished as runners-up to Bayern Munich in each of the past two Bundesliga campaigns but currently sit in the relegation zone at the mid-way point in the German domestic title race.

Man United’s bid is thought to be a significant one and Hummels is rightly valued at as much as £30m, a fair fee to pay for one of the world’s best defenders.

Though Man United have improved a great deal of late, going 11 games unbeaten, they are still not all that solid at the back and senior defenders Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling have all struggled with form and fitness leading to Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair being thrown in at the deep end at times this term.
