The player has been linked to Liverpool and Inter Milan quite strongly over the last few weeks according to the article, and a move could be on the cards during the current transfer window. Hitzfeld coached the Swiss while he was manager of the national team, and thinks that current coach Pep Guardiola doesn’t have enough faith in the winger.

The time has come where it is best for Xherdan to leave the club. He needs a new challenge. It is important for him now to make the next step in his development and be a starter on a regular basis,” the 65-year-old was quoted as saying by Blick.

The 23-year-old has been struggling for match time this season, having only made nine appearances and scoring one goal in the process so far this campaign. Even when first choice wide men Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery were both injured, Shaqiri was finding it difficult to get in to the starting XI.

He added, “We saw in the past six months or so that Guardiola did not trust him for the full 100 per cent, even when Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were injured. It was not easy for him that he still did not feature from the start then.”

Inter are thought to be in pole position for the player, but a move to Anfield is still a possibility for the player who made a name for himself at the World Cup.
