Szczesny was reprimanded after being caught smoking in the showers following Arsenal’s terrible New Years Day defeat at Southampton.
The Polish shot stopper was kept out of the Arsenal side that beat Hull City in the FA Cup 3rd round but is due to return to the starting XI against Stoke this weekend.
However, his more long-term future has been cast in serious doubt with Arsene Wenger monitoring two potential targets from the Bundesliga according to The Times.
Mainz’s first choice keeper Loris Karius and Kaiserslautern stopper Tobias Sippel are both out of contract in the summer and Wenger sees them both as potential replacements for the Pole.
Karius is just 21 and started his senior career at Manchester City but failed to make an impression before moving to Mainz where he has become the first choice.
Sippel, meanwhile, has greater experience at 26 and was the contemporary of Balon d’Or nominee Manuel Neuer in the Germany youth levels.
Wenger considers both equally good enough to remove Szczesny from his role as undisputed Arsenal no. 1 as he does David Ospina.
This affair has damaged both Szczesny and Arsenal’s reputations and the fall out could see him yet further dropped and eventually removed from the club in the summer.
