United could move for French international midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
Manchester United are set to enter the race for Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, report the Mirror, with Old Trafford chief Louis van Gaal reportedly viewing the French international as a potential long term replacement for Michael Carrick, although United are set to face competition from a host of massive Premier League rivals for one of English football’s most in demand players.

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, the latter managed by Mauricio Pochettino who was in charge of Schneiderlin at St. Mary’s until the summer, are both believed to be willing to pay a huge fee of £27 million for the services of Schneiderlin, so well has he proven himself as a top class Premier League box-to-box midfielder since his club’s promotion back to the top flight.
United are far from flush with options in the midfield positions, however, particularly with van Gaal seemingly reticent to use Ander Herrera and Darren Fletcher with regularity this season and 34 year-old Michael Carrick, who has had a huge influence this season, heading into the twilight years of his Old Trafford career.
Schneiderlin would certainly fit the bill as a long term replacement for Carrick, with the Frenchman only just heading into his prime, but it would require a huge financial investment into Schneiderlin’s quality to force Southampton into selling their most prized asset.
