So here CaughtOffside picks out the 20 best players so far in 2014/15.

20. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United

Appointed captain of the Red Devils over the summer by new manager Louis van Gaal and is thriving in his new role both on and off the field.

19. David Silva, Manchester City

One of the most consistent players the league has ever seen Silva has even started popping up with a few goals this term as well.

18. Diafra Sakho, West Ham United

Signed from relative obscurity over the summer having been with Ligue 2 outfit Metz, seven goals in 13 games has played a big part in the Hammers’ success.

17. Jose Fonte, Southampton

Many credited Dejan Lovren with the Saints’ solidity at the back last year, but the Croat has now left for Liverpool and Fonte is now the one succeeding.

16. Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea City

Left Tottenham Hotspur to return to the club where he had a previously positive loan spell and has been brilliant as a No.10 with plenty of assists and goals.

15. Morgan Schneiderlin, Southampton

Wanted to be part of the St Mary’s exodus over the summer, but staying was the best thing that could have happened to the Frenchman as none of those five big stars that left feature on this list.

14. Stewart Downing, West Ham United

Back to the Boleyn Ground now and Downing has been impressing so much he is back in Roy Hodgson’s England setup once again.

13. Nathaniel Clyne, Southampton

Was battling with Calum Chambers for a spot at right-back last term, but since the youngster left for Arsenal it has been Clyne’s to take and he too is now established in the Three Lions camp.

12. Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea

Another full-back now and a versatile Spaniard who looks just as assured whether on the left or right side of defence.

11. Wilfried Bony, Swansea City

With more goals in 2014 than any other player this Ivory Coast international certainly deserves his place in the list and has been a real asset for Garry Monk.

10. Charlie Austin, QPR

The striker’s goals have kept Harry Redknapp’s men in the battle against relegation and many are saying that Austin deserves and England call-up himself.

9. Gary Cahill, Chelsea

Not many centre-backs look as assured in defence as this England international with Cahill forming arguably the best central defensive partnership in European football.

8. John Terry, Chelsea

Here is the other half of that partnership and despite now being 34-years-old the Blues captain looks as good as he have has at the back.

7. Diego Costa, Chelsea

Continuing the theme of stars from Stamford Bridge is a striker signed for £32m over the summer and who has been lethal in front of goal ever since.

6. Nemanja Matic, Chelsea

With Jose Mourinho’s men top of the league currently it’s easy to see why so many of his players are included, with this midfielder a real rock in the middle of the pitch.

5. Sergio Aguero, Manchester City

Back to the Etihad Stadium now and the current top-scorer in the English top tier with injuries the only thing holding Aguero back from becoming a contender to be the best player in the world.

4. Eden Hazard, Chelsea

Since first signing for the West Londoners back in 2012 this Belgium international has been consistently brilliant and he too could be a future Ballon d’Or winner.

3. David de Gea, Manchester United

United have put themselves in a title challenging position in recent times and although it’s a team game that has been largely thanks to this brilliant goalkeeper.

2. Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea

Returning to English football after three years away with FC Barcelona it’s as if this midfield ace was never away as Fabregas has become a creative behemoth.

1. Alexis Sanchez, Arsenal

Just edging it as our No.1 though is the only Gunners representative on the list, with Arsene Wenger’s men having been generally poor but their £35m summer acquisition looking sharp at all times.
