Since the Premier League began in 1992 both Arsenal and Liverpool have been stalwarts, with the former winning three titles during that time.

Here CaughtOffside puts together a best combined XI of the two teams from the era.

GK – Pepe Reina

A controversial pick perhaps with Gunners fans screaming that David Seaman should be there, but for three successive Golden Glove awards we give this one to the Spaniard.

RB – Jamie Carragher

Right-back is actually a remarkably difficult spot to fill and although it probably wasn’t Carragher’s best position, we felt the Reds legend needed to be in this team.

CB – Tony Adams

A true leader at Highbury, Adams’ success in North London began in the 1980s and stretched all the way through until his retirement in 2002.

CB – Sol Campbell

Controversially left Tottenham Hotspur for their fierce rivals, but two league titles and a Champions League final proved this centre-back’s decision correct.

LB – Ashley Cole

Completing an all English back four is a left-back who caused his own controversy in 2006 by leaving for Chelsea, but had already established himself as a world-class defender by then.

RM – Steven Gerrard

Another player out of position, although the Anfield faithful will remember their long-term captain pushed out wide and again we had to accommodate some big names into this team.

CM – Patrick Vieira

Was Arsene Wenger’s first signing and went onto skipper the team and lead them to three league titles before leaving for Serie A in 2005.

CM – Xabi Alonso

The reason Gerrard is out wide is because this current Bayern Munich midfielder needed to be included as arguably the greatest passer the division has ever seen.

LM – Robert Pires

Bought in to replace Marc Overmars when he left for FC Barcelona and although a completely different type of player, was even more effective for Wenger’s side.

ST – Luis Suarez

It was a tough call to leave names such as Dennis Bergkamp and Robbie Fowler out of the XI, but for his sheer class over the past two years Suarez nicks it for us.

ST – Thierry Henry

Saving the best until last and it’s a Frenchman who has just retired from the game after becoming a true club legend during his eight years in North London.
