Adelaide pay the price for poor finishing

Poor finishing has hurt the Reds all season, but they weren’t made to pay for it as they were on Friday against the Brisbane Roar.

Not many would have bet on a Roar win, but errant finishing meant Josep Gombau’s side fell to just its second defeat all season.

The loss of Marcelo Carrusca was telling, and it will be interesting to see how they bounce back in the FFA Cup final on Tuesday.

Evergreen Archie Thompson

Even at the age of 36, Thompson still has a turn of speed an a nose for goal that some of the league’s young-guns could only dream of.

Thompson was at his best against Sydney on Saturday, scoring a hat-trick in his side’s 3-3 draw with the Sky Blues.

He now boasts a record of 84 goals in his nine-and-a-bit seasons in the competition, making him the top goalscorer in A-League history.

Phil Stubbins remains defiant despite Jets’ stuggles

The Jets are yet to win a match this season, but manager Phil Stubbins remains defiant.

Perth took full control in is 2-0 win over Newcastle and were never in any danger of dropping the three points.

Despite the loss, Stubbins said he believed his side had shown signs of improvement, but it is bleedingly obvious that something needs to change.

What to make of the Brisbane Roar?

Not many would have backed the Roar to defeat the scintillating Reds, but they somehow pulled it off.

Matt McKay, Steven Lustica and Luke Brattan were excellent in the Brisbane midfield, while young defender James Donachie had easily one of his best performances in a Roar shirt.

Interim boss Frans Thijssen seems to have brought some sort of stability to the squad, but the Brisbane still have some way to go before achieving consistency.

Perth can deal with the pressure

The A-League’s surprise packets are cruising a long in top spot and don’t look like losing it any time soon after their 2-0 win over the Jets.

Many expected the Glory to fall away, but there’s no doubting they’re the real deal.

There’s still a long way to go, but Kenny Lowe’s side will be fighting for the title.
