Twitter’s own Premier League table, with teams ranked by their number of mentions…
That’s right, Louis van Gaal has topped the Premier League table for the first time as Manchester United boss… on Twitter. Telegraph statistics have revealed that United are the most mentioned team from England’s top flight on the social media site, edging out Arsenal for top spot.

Below is the full Premier League table according to Twitter – with those at the bottom of the table and in the relegation zone being mentioned the least in the 2014 calender year, and vice-versa. Flick through the pages below to see the full results:
20) Burnley – Sean Dyche’s side came through somewhat under the radar as they earned promotion to the Premier League.
19) Hull City – Even a run to the FA Cup final wasn’t enough to keep the Tigers out of the relegation zone.
18) Swansea City – Swansea have continued to impress this year under Gary Monk, but not many people are talking about it.
17) Stoke City – Mark Hughes has solidified Stoke as a solid mid-table team, and clearly less people are annoyed about their tough tackling style.
16) West Bromwich Albion – The Baggies were forced to scrap for Premier League survival last season, and another managerial change has sparked some interest.
15) Crystal Palace – Caused a stir by allowing Tony Pulis to leave as manager shortly before the start of the new season.
14) Queens Park Rangers – Came up via the play-offs, and were busy again in the summer transfer window.
13) West Ham United – After the speculation around their manager’s future, they have made a fantastic start to the new season.
12) Sunderland – Thrashed 8-0 by Southampton to make plenty of headlines, while also held Chelsea to a 0-0 draw.
11) Leicester City – Won promotion from the Championship and stunned Manchester United in a crazy match earlier this year.
10) Aston Villa – Roy Keane’s arrival and swift departure drew plenty of attention, as have their varied results.
9) Southampton – Kept selling players in the summer transfer window, before defying logic with a superb start to the new season.
8) Everton – Made a couple of major purchases in the summer window, while their best players are inevitably linked with moves elsewhere.
7) Tottenham Hotspur – Another managerial change in the summer followed a roller coaster year for Spurs, which often saw them on the end of heavy defeats.
6) Newcastle United – The ‘Sack Pardew’ campaign was unable to get their way, and the Magpies have responded with an astonishing revival in recent weeks.
5) Manchester City – The Premier League champions won the title on the final day once again, although admittedly not in as dramatic style as they did in 2012.
4) Chelsea – Jose Mourinho’s first season back in charge delivered mixed results, but there has been no doubting the Blues credentials this time around.
3) Liverpool – The Reds came so close to breaking their Premier League title duck last season, and their horrific downturn this season has only got more people talking.
2) Arsenal – How much of this is down to Piers Morgan alone? Arsenal finally broke their trophy drought with victory in last season’s FA Cup, but that has not eased the pressure on manager Arsene Wenger.
1) Manchester United – Louis van Gaal’s arrival, along with a £150m spend in the summer transfer window, has completed a topsy-turvy year that also saw David Moyes sacked and Ryan Giggs retire.
