CaughtOffside takes a look at what’s still to play for in the Champions League as we approach the last round of group fixtures.
Group A
Fixtures:
Olympiacos v Malmo
Juventus v Atletico Madrid
Whilst Atletico Madrid are already assured qualification into the last 16 of the competition, it is not yet decided who will be joining them and who will be seeded.
The Spanish Champions will clinch top spot as long as they do not lose to Juventus by two goals or more.
Meanwhile, Juventus can scrape into the next round with a draw or if Olympiacos fail to win but the Greeks will pip the Italians to second if they win and Juventus lose.
Malmo are confirmed as out of the running for qualification but will be able to achieve third place, and the Europa League position, with a win.
Group B
Fixtures:
Liverpool v Basel
Real Madrid v Ludogorets
Real Madrid are assured first place as the only side left in the competition with a 100% record in all group matches.
Liverpool against Basel is the key fixture of the group with either side’s qualification depending on the outcome of the match.
Basel can get through with a draw whilst Liverpool will leapfrog the Swiss side into second if they can manage a win.
Ludogorets may already be out of the next round of the Champions League but can finish third if they win – or Liverpool lose and the Bulgarian side draw.
Group C
Fixtures:
Monaco v Zenit
Benfica v Bayer Leverkusen
Benfica are assured a fourth placed finish but the next three positions are anyone’s guess. Bayer are definitely through and will achieve first place if they win.
Monaco, meanwhile, can qualify with a draw and if the German side lose would finish first. Zenit will qualify with a win and could even get top spot if Bayer lose in Portugal.
Group D
Fixtures:
Galatasaray v Arsenal
Borussia Dortmund v Anderlecht
Arsenal may have inconsistent Premier League form but have already qualified for the next round of the Champions League and could get top spot if they win and Dortmund lose.
Dortmund, however, will be confident of finishing first – even if they draw with Anderlecht, Arsenal would have to defeat Galatasaray by a margin of six.
Galatasaray are confirmed out and Anderlecht are into the Europa League already by coming third.
Group E
Fixtures:
Roma v Manchester City
Bayern Munich v CSKA Moscow
Bayern have clinched first place but any of the remaining three teams could get second.
CSKA must win and hope Roma do not beat Manchester City.
If City lose, they will be confirmed out of all European competitions this season but could get second with a win if CSKA do not win or they get a score draw and CSKA lose.
Roma can get by on a draw if CSKA lose but will definitely finish 2nd with a victory over City if CSKA cannot win in Munich.
Group F
Fixtures:
Barcelona v Paris Saint Germain
Ajax v APOEL
Ajax and APOEL are out of the running for Champions League qualification but the Dutch side will feature in the Europa league if their match with APOEL ends in a draw. The Cypriot side can get third with a win.
Barcelona and PSG are both in the next round. The Catalans needs a victory against the French side to win the group whilst the Parisians can get top spot with a draw in Spain.
Group G
Fixtures:
Chelsea v Sporting Club de Portugal
Maribor v Schalke
Chelsea are confirmed group winners after their 5-0 thrashing of Schalke in the last round of fixtures. Maribor, though, are out of the running for the Champions League but can finish third with a win.
Sporting will clinch second with a draw or if Schalke simply lose.
The German side need a win and must hope Sporting lose if they are to come second.
Group H
Fixtures:
Porto v Shakhtar Donetsk
Athletic Club v BATE
Happily, the qualification for the next round of the Champions League is already decided in Group H with Porto already confirmed as first and Shakhtar Donetsk second.
BATE must win if they want any shot of qualifying for the Europa league, however, whilst Athletic need only avoid defeat to finish in third spot.
